Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire is a YA portal fantasy and the fifth book in her Wayward Children series. Odd-numbered books progress the plot forward, while even-numbered books tend to be prequels with backstory information.
Jack left the School for Wayward Children carrying her sister Jill’s body directly after murdering her as justice for the events of the first book in this series. Her door reopened, and she took the corpse back with her to the Moors. But now Jack is the body being carried by someone her friends do not recognize. And they’re not 100% sure they recognize Jack either…
Jack is definitely my favorite character in this series. I liked that we got to see more of her relationships in the Moors, which is basically the setting of all black and white horror films. I loved the nod that Vincent Price may have been a visitor there. We also got to delve a little deeper into Jack’s mental health as well.
The characters in this series are all wonderfully diverse, per usual. This is probably my second favorite in the series so far, and I definitely plan to keep reading them.
Tropes in this book include: portal fantasy, paranormal, science-fiction, sapphic relationship, character with OCD
CW: dysphoria, murder, blood
