My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is a charming debut paranormal romantic comedy.
Cassie is the epitome of a starving artist with an MFA. Her best friend shows her a too-good-to-be-true Craigslist ad for an apartment in Chicago, but she’s sure there’s a catch. And her new roommate Frederick is pretty weird: he sleeps all day, is out all night, and walks and talks like the characters in the regency romance novels he seems to enjoy. And then Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge…
This was a breath of fresh air and I had such a blast reading it. It was my kind of goofy and I lost count how many times I laughed out loud. It’s been a while since I’ve read a true rom-com, which was great. The end has a set-up for a second book, and I’m very excited to read further into this world.
Some of the vampire lore here is stuff that I’ve heard before, but there were a few new and cute things thrown in. Frederick gives off big Darcy vibes, and I’m always here for that.
I also really liked the epistolary segments at the beginnings of chapters. They’re always a bit different, but feature text message exchanges, letters and notes, journal entries, and selections from books. I’m a big epistolary girlie, so I get very excited when that feature is included in a book.
The end felt like it was wrapped up too quickly; I would have absolutely read more from this story. The third act breakup was also resolved a bit fast for my taste. I wish we would have gotten some of Frederick’s POV in here as well, that would have really provided depth to the book in general.
If you’re looking for something fun and lighthearted, especially for spooky season this fall, this is a great book to pick up!
Tropes in this book include: cinnamon roll hero, epistolary, slow burn, age gap, forced proximity, opposites attract
CW: blood, abduction
