Compass Points by Jillian Witt is a debut fantasy romance set in a world inspired by United States National Parks.

It has been ten years since Rose left home after tragedy. Her secrets may not be safe from the leader of the earth fae, who is seeking a magical weapons master. And she just might be the key to saving the continent from a deadly plague.

This was quite an enjoyable, and very digestible, quick read. The worldbuilding was great, with fae separated into houses (north/south/east/west) based on their elemental magic. The antagonist was interesting, and so was the plague. The pacing was pretty solid, which is always amazing to see in a debut novel!

I’d say this leans a bit towards the cozy fantasy side of things, which I appreciate. We do get some glimpses of political fantasy, but we mostly follow our main character Rose and the found family she is starting to create. There are a handful of kissing scenes, including a kiss as a distraction, and there is one open-door scene that isn’t overly detailed.

I loved Rose’s companion Arie and I’m excited to learn more about him in the next installment since we did get a bit of a lore drop about him towards the end of this novel.

Compass Points came out earlier this month, and you can read it for FREE with Kindle Unlimited.

Tropes in this book include: enemies to lovers, only one bed, forced proximity, forbidden love, slow burn, fake dating, found family
