In this memoir, Britney Spears takes us from her humble and heartbreaking beginnings in Louisiana to the dissolution of her thirteen-year long conservatorship. Britney narrates the introduction, and then the actress Michelle Williams reads the rest.
If you’re expecting a lot of details, that’s not what you’re going to get as this book is on the short side. She does a lot of name-dropping, but sometimes this reads like the Cliffs Notes version of her life, without much introspection. Honestly, that was okay for me; she can tell us what she’s comfortable telling us. Rehashing everything to create this memoir must have been difficult, as she’s dealt with a lot of trauma throughout her life.
As a neurodiverse person, reading about what she went through was horrifying. I’m proud of Britney for speaking her truth.
There have been so many times when I was scared to speak up because I was afraid somebody would think I was crazy. You have to speak the thing that you’re feeling, even if it scares you. You have to tell your story. You have to raise your voice.
