Ok, I definitely picked this one up based on the hype from bookish internet spheres, and I’m very glad I did.
Fourth Wing is HIGHLY consumable, with a fast-paced plot that makes you want to keep going. I read to 41% in my first sitting.
I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by Rebecca Soler. She does a great job with different voices, and even picks up the pace a bit at the end of chapters to expand upon the tension.
I initially borrowed the audiobook from my local library, but before I even finished it I bought it and the audiobook for Iron Flame.
There are some steamy scenes that are very well written. I also appreciated how important explicit and enthusiastic consent was in all of those interactions.
I also really appreciated the casual queerness throughout the book. Her new best friend is queer and has a sapphic fling and at least one of the cadets is nonbinary.
And probably the most major representation in this book is with our main character, Violet, who is disabled with some sort of connective tissue disorder that seems similar to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Her love interest and dragon work together to help provide aids to her, like a specialty harness/saddle so she does not fall while flying.
The quote that made me want to buy a physical copy so I can re-read and annotate:
There’s nowhere in existence you could go that I wouldn’t find you, Violence.
