The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains by Neil Gaiman is a paranormal horror short story. I followed along in the physical book with illustrations by Eddie Campbell while listening to the audiobook, which is narrated by the author with the FourPlay String Quartet providing musical backup.
I highly recommend reading this book in that manner.
As this is a short story, I’ll be as vague as possible on the synopsis: we follow two men walking through Scotland around the time of the Jacobite rebellion while exploring themes of family, grief, and the search for hidden treasure.
This really helped to scratch a folklore itch I had. Gaiman is very good at creating atmosphere, and I felt like I was walking in the mountains along with the characters. The illustrations heightened that vibe for me.
All in all, this is a wonderful short and enjoyable read for Spoopy Month.
