(3.5 rounded up to a 4)

Four Weddings and a Duke by Michelle McLean is a historical romance featuring a wallflower and botanist.

Alex, once the spare, is now the Duke of Beaubrooke. His father made a deal with a friend where his son would choose one of three sisters to wed. After an adorable meet-cute at a party, Alex chooses Lavinia, the overlooked sister who prefers reading to parties.

I always appreciate the banter in McLean’s books. Our hero is a botanist, and his academic rival ends up being Lavinia’s best friend. Their fights are hilarious and adorable. There is some science-talk, but it doesn’t go too in-depth and it’s easy to understand.

The main conflict between our couple ends up coming down to miscommunication (one of my least favorite tropes). However, Alex’s grand gesture at the end was quite lovely.

The steam in this book was very good. Alex and Liv have great chemistry and banter. There is a huge focus on checking in and I love to see good communication in those instances.

Tropes in this book include: arranged marriage, wallflower
