I borrowed the audiobook version from my library. Eilidh Beaton was a pretty great narrator! Different character voices were distinct and always felt true to the person.

I started the book on my way home from a weekend camping with friends and finished it up at home while unpacking. This was an enjoyable background read for me; I really liked the author’s prose. There are several side characters, like Teddy and Annie, who I really loved.

It deals with pretty heavy topics, including people being sent to asylums “for their own good.”

The big thing that holds this book back for me is the pacing. There is one moment that should be very tense, but then the main character stops and reads things, which really killed my suspension of disbelief.

CW: violence, homophobia, racism, misogyny, assault
