Haunt Sweet Home by Sarah Pinsker is a contemporary paranormal horror novella featuring a reality tv show.

Mara is in her twenties but isn’t quite sure what she wants to do with her life. Her cousin invites her to work as a production assistant on his ghost hunting/home makeover reality tv show over the summer. She’s on the night production team, and they’re not supposed to talk to the day team about anything they do at night.

I definitely saw myself in Mara a lot, especially since I graduated college right in the middle of the the financial crisis of 2008. I definitely have lived experiences with my family similar to those she has in this book.

The reality tv aspect was really fun. I listened to the audiobook version, which is narrated by a cast of four people: Jennifer Bloom, Jess Nahikian, Matt Godfrey, and Robb Moreira. This really helped the mixed media interstitials–made up of transcripts from episodes of the reality tv show–shine. I do love a book with mixed media.

If you’re looking for something to dip your toes into the horror genre, this is probably a great option for you because I’d consider it horror-lite.
