Revolutionary Mary by Karen Blumenthal is a bold picture book biography about Mary Katherine Goddard, the only woman whose name is printed on the Declaration of Independence.
During the American Revolution, Mary used her printing press to publish important news to help fight against the British, even though she would have been punished for treason if she was caught. In fact, she even printed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Her last name was familiar to me, since I live in the D.C. area and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is nearby (and I have a friend who works there). It was really cool reading about her running a print shop in Baltimore, not too far from me!
