Mixed-Up by Kami Garcia is a middle grade graphic novel about learning differences.

Stella is entering fifth grade in the same class as her two best friends. To make things even better, their favorite tv show just announced a new guidebook and video game! Stella’s classwork started to pile up a little too quickly, and she starts to wonder how she can keep up with her friends in their game if it takes her so long to read.

As someone with a form of dyslexia, I thought this was really well done! Especially the process of Stella’s lovely teachers and family coming together to get her the tools and support she needed after (and in the progress of) her dyslexia diagnosis.

The art style is also really lovely! I appreciated the racial, body type, and gender diversity in background characters, like the teachers at school. There are a variety of family types among Stella’s classmates, and several of the kids use a prosthesis or a mobility aid.
