Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson is a whimsical fantasy adventure with romance elements.
I had such a fun time reading this book! I borrowed the audiobook from my local library, and by the time I got to the 40% mark I had already gone to Pango to buy a used copy for my shelves. I already know that I’m going to re-read this and annotate it, and I will be underlining so many quotes!
It’s easy to see that this book was directly inspired by The Princess Bride. I really loved the framework the author used, and I vibed with the humor as well. The worldbuilding for the different seas was very interesting. I appreciated the disability representation of a character who is deaf and mute; they use a special board as a tool to communicate, in addition to a type of sign language.
If you’re a fan of found family, you should absolutely read this book. It’s also a great recommendation for fans of cozy or adventure fantasy.
