Rebel Witch by Kristen Ciccarelli is the final book in The Crimson Moth YA romantasy duology.
Unpopular opinion time! I thought this book (and series) was just okay.
I bought the hardcover via my Book of the Month subscription and borrowed the audio from my local library. I enjoyed the narrator and think she did a good job. She always had the right amount of emotion in her voice depending on what she was reading.
Unfortunately, I called all of the “twists” in both books in this duology. I listened to the audiobook versions of both, and I found myself yelling back at the book occasionally, including things along the lines of “of COURSE that’s what happened, you ninny, look at the clues you have.”
Rune and Gideon also felt like their heads weren’t fully in the game in this installment. We didn’t quite make it to TSTL territory (google it if you need to), but man they each made some boneheaded decisions. Part of that could have been the grief both were feeling, but at the same time I feel like we didn’t really fully explore their individual grief journeys enough.
That being said, I think the author did a pretty good job with the ending. I liked how their society decided to move forward, and I was pleased with our main couple’s happily ever after. They always had good chemistry and great banter, they just really needed to learn to trust one another.
Tropes: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, only one bed/cabin
