Every Time I Go On Vacation, Someone Dies is the fun and funny opener of The Vacation Mysteries series by Catherine Mack.
I borrowed the audiobook from my local library. The narrator does a phenomenal job, especially juggling low and high voices throughout the book. There’s a pretty large cast of characters here, and she made them all feel distinct and easy to follow who was talking. She also had amazing comedic timing.
I figured out the mystery pretty quickly, but I still had fun reading this one and especially loved the cast of characters. I found myself laughing out lout a lot. This book was set in Italy and it was also fun to be a tourist through the eyes of the characters in this book. There were so many amazing descriptions of food!
The author uses the narrative device of footnotes throughout the book. It was a little hard to parse what was a footnote in just the audiobook, and I wish I had an ebook or physical copy to follow those a little better.
There’s also a meta element in that our main character is a mystery novelist as well, which is something I love in books. I hope we get to dig into her a little more in the next book in the series!
