Boys Weekend is a sci-fi horror graphic novel by Mattie Lubchansky featuring a trans-“final girl.”
I had a lot of fun reading this!
Sammie is an artist’s assistant who came out as nonbinary transfemme about a year prior to the events of the graphic novel. Now, they’re about to take a “vacation” to be the “best man” at their college best friend’s bachelor party. Said party is being held on a “hedonistic wonderland of a city floating in the Atlantic Ocean’s international waters.”
It gets pretty wild! I love satire, and this graphic novel is certainly full of it. But there’s also a lot of body horror throughout, along with a mysterious cult built around hustle culture and dude-bros.
There’s also a lot of heart. Sammie repeatedly has check-ins with their support system back home while they’re dealing with everything at the bachelor party. The ending of this book made me tear up a bit.
CW: casual transphobia, queerphobia, gun violence, cult, tentacles
