Dead & Breakfast is a fantastic (and funny!) debut paranormal cozy mystery from co-authors Kat Hillis and Rosiee Thor.
I listened to the audiobook via Spotify (reminder: you get 15 hours/month if you have a premium subscription!) while following along in my physical review copy. The narrator does a fantastic job!
There are some really great puns throughout this book, but there’s a particular joke that won’t land if someone does not know the correct way to pronounce the word “pho.” Blissfully, the narrator fully landed that pun and a lot of other great jokes throughout the novel.
I absolutely inhaled this book. I laughed out loud so many times in the first chapter that I immediately messaged my bookish friends to hype it up.
The worldbuilding seems pretty interesting. There are quite a few different types of paranormal folks mentioned in the book, including our vampire leads, witches, werewolves, and fae. There’s also an interesting theory regarding who created the first curse and fun discussion about folkloric weaknesses and characteristics of vampires.
If you’re a fan of Dropout’s brand of humor, I think you’d absolutely enjoy this book. It would also be good for fans of books by Janet Evanovich, Elle Cosimano, or Jesse Q. Sutanto.
This would make a fantastic series, both of cozy mystery books and a tv series. I’m already fan-casting Alan Cumming as Sal and Roger Bart as Arthur.
