Saevus Corax Deals with the Dead is a snarky fantasy by K.J. Parker with a heaping helping of black humor.
I listened to the audiobook while following along in my physical review copy. The narrator does a great job, especially with comedic timing and distinct character voices.
This is my first book by the author, but absolutely not my last. This book feels very grimdark meets Terry Pratchett. I really enjoyed the snarky, black humor–It was right up my alley. And it’s always fun reading fantasy that is not focused on magic!
It’s worth noting that the book is written in the first person. I don’t typically mind it, and enjoyed its use here. But I know not everyone can parse that point of view as easily, so I like to mention it in my reviews.
There’s a lot of adventure in this book! We really travel a lot, across many countries even. I really wish there was a map included at the beginning of the book so I could more easily visualize just how much our MC and his friends/enemies/frenemies moved about.
The pacing was a little uneven for me, but overall I still had a fun time reading. I’m excited to see what happens in the next book!
I received a complimentary review copy from Orbit Books and Hachette Audio. All opinions contained herein are my own.
