The Nightshade God is the final book in the Nightshade Crown fantasy romance trilogy by Hannah Whitten.

I listened to my audio review copy while following along with my physical ARC. The narrator does a pretty good job and was enjoyable to listen to.

Just like the first two books in this series, it took me a minute to get into this book. But once I did, I absolutely inhaled the final 40%. Casual queerness continues to be at the forefront, with sexually fluid and nonbinary characters all around.

The magic system is pretty cool; with a duality between Morten (death magic) and Spiritum (life magic). But we can’t forget about elemental magic that for Reasons don’t seem as prevalent.

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m hormonal or not but I cried a lot towards the end of this book. This does tend to happen to me in the case of fantasy trilogies, so I wasn’t surprised. But have tissues handy if you are prone to having emotions from books.

If you’re a fan of religion and court politics, you should absolutely try this trilogy.

And Ms. Whitten, can we please get an epilogue novella following Alie?

CW: sexual violence (implied, not on-page), religious abuse, graphic violence

I received a complimentary review copy from Orbit and Hachette Audio. All opinions contained herein are my own.
