Maude Horton’s Glorious Revenge by Lizzie Pook is a historical fiction with adventure and mystery elements.
The audiobook is narrated by Genevieve Gaunt, and I think she did an amazing job.
The eponymous Maude receives the journal of her late sister: a girl who ran away and pretended to be a cabin boy on an arctic expedition. To avenge her death, Maude swears to get to the bottom of her “accident.”
The atmosphere of the book was pretty great. We shift between multiple points of view, including Maude’s and the sinister Edison Stowe. We also have several entries from the journal of Jack Aldridge, the alter ego Maude’s sister Constance was using aboard the ship. I liked flipping between all of those perspectives throughout the book.
We get to see the darker sides of London, including tourism that popped up around the public hangings of murderers. Money lenders also make an appearance.
If you’re looking for a dash of mystery or suspense in your historical fiction or if you’re interested in learning a bit more about the Arctic, you may want to pick this one up!
