My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Warlord Wants Forever is a prequel novella in the Immortals After Dark urban fantasy series by Kresley Cole. The eBook version is 154 pages. We follow our two main characters with an alternating third-person point-of-view.
Nikolai Wroth is a general in the Vampire army who is searching for his Bride, his fated mate who can “blood” him and make his heart beat again, fill him with added strength, and give him other powers. Myst is a Valkyrie spy who steadfastly protects her magical jewelry while fighting her enemy: the vampires.
Our heroine is a hilarious spitfire (I loved her immediately) and our hero is a gentleman grump. This novella is quite steamy. The worldbuilding is very interesting and I can see why this is a favorite series for a lot of folks I know. I feel like the whole “Bride” thing is very heteronormative, so I have hopes that future installments in this series can push at the gender and sexual binary a bit. I was a bit worried that consent may be an issue in this book, but I generally was okay with what the author did here in a “fated mate” kind of story.
Tropes in this book include: fated mate, enemies-to-lovers
CW: sexual assault, slut-shaming
