Soul Taken is an urban fantasy novel by Patricia Briggs, and the thirteenth installment in her Mercy Thompson series. The ebook version is 352 pages. We mostly follow our main character with a first-person point-of-view, but there is also a chapter following another character in the third-person.
Being that this is the thirteenth book in the series, I’ll be as vague as possible. Mercy is tasked to “find Wulfe” by Marsillia, the leader of the local vampire seethe, in order to maintain the careful and meticulous alliances that keep their werewolf pack safe. Meanwhile, someone is running around killing people with a sentient weapon, by pretending to be a “copycat” killer from a recent B horror film.
I had a hard time putting this book down. I ended up reading it in ~25% chunks and stayed up way too late (RIP my sleep schedule). I couldn’t help it though, there were So Many Lore Drops in this book! (Wulfe! Sherwood! Zee!) I kept squeeing to my partner about them but he’d just smile and nod since he had no idea what I was talking about.
Speaking of which, you definitely have to read the other books in the series first before getting to this one. The personal dynamics won’t work if you try to read it as a standalone. I absolutely love watching several of the relationships in this series grow and become stronger.
Also I need to talk about how gorgeous the cover is! The crescent moon in the background echoing the shape of the scythe is perfection. Dan dos Santos is a phenomenal artist. I think this is my favorite cover from the whole series.
CW: stalking, violence, spiders, guns
